At Indore, April 15, 2006. India won by seven wickets. Toss: India. International debut: R. Uthappa.
An opening stand of 166 between Robin Uthappa and Dravid, both alumni of St Joseph's Boys' High School in Bangalore (13 years apart), paved the way for a crushing 5-1 series victory, despite England's largest one-day total in India. Uthappa overcame a nervous start against the short ball to hit 12 fours and a six in 96 balls; his 86 was the highest score for India on one-day debut. Had Anderson's throw from long-off not caught him with his bat ungrounded, he might have become the fifth player - after Dennis Amiss, Desmond Haynes, Andy Flower and Salim Elahi - to register a debut century. Yuvraj Singh and Raina added a decisive 115, but victory did not arrive until the last over. England could only rue their failure to reach 300: fifties from Pietersen, Collingwood and Jones had promised more until a succession of slogs to the outfield gifted Sreesanth six wickets. Pietersen had raced to 50 in 39 balls, taking 23 out of 26 off one Vikram Singh over. But he lost his fluency after hitting the inside of his left knee with the bat. As a metaphor for England's stuttering efforts, it was perfect.
Man of the Match: S. Sreesanth.
Man of the Series: Yuvraj Singh.
