†INDIA v NEW ZEALAND 1987-88

At Sharjah, April 1

15-Apr-1989
At Sharjah, April 1. India won by 52 runs. Toss: India. An analysis of Chatfield's bowling figures summed up India's innings. His first five overs cost 6 runs; his last, the 50th, cost 18. India, having taken 32 overs to reach 100, added 150 in the next eighteen, with 50 coming from the last 21 balls. Partnerships of 72 between Amarnath (71 balls) and Shastri, who began with a first-ball six, and 73 between Shastri and Kapil Dev (26 balls) provided the momentum. Shastri hit three fours and three sixes in his 68-ball 72 which took him past 2,000 runs in one-day internationals. Wright played fluently until running himself out, but Greatbatch, dropped at 5 and 23, was less convincing. The leg-spin of Hirwani stifled the New Zealand middle order. Smith hit 40 from 33 balls to leave 56 needed from the last ten overs, but his dismissal signalled the end for New Zealand.
Man of the Match: R. J. Shastri.
