†INDIA v NEW ZEALAND 1988-89

At Visakhapatnam, December 10

15-Apr-1990
At Visakhapatnam, December 10. India won by four wickets. Toss: India. Srikkanth turned in an all-round performance of note, emulating I. V. A. Richards in taking five wickets and scoring a half-century, although the West Indian had gone on to a century (v New Zealand in 1986-87) to define the all-round standard in limited-overs cricket. New Zealand were going along merrily, with Jones and Rutherford having just added 114 in a little over 28 overs, when Srikkanth came on as India's seventh bowler. Jones had been caught on the line off Maninder and Greatbatch had been run out without facing a ball. Srikkanth bowled Rutherford and ran through the rest of the batting to reap five wickets with his flattish type of off-spin that has most balls leaving the bat on pitching. He then went on to score 70 off 93 balls to stabilise India's reply, and Azharuddin confidently took the match to its natural conclusion with an unbeaten 48.
Man of the Match: K. Srikkanth.
