†INDIA v NEW ZEALAND 1988-89

At Baroda, December 17

15-Apr-1990
At Baroda, December 17. India won by two wickets. Toss: New Zealand. Having already won the series, the Indians chose to field a largely experimental side. The New Zealanders, for their part, at last found their one-day batting form and in ideal conditions compiled their highest score against India. Wright and Jones began with 140 in 27.2 overs and Greatbatch played a powerful innings of 84 off 65 balls, hitting eight fours and two sixes. Manjrekar was the one top-order batsman to shine for India, hitting his first half-century at this level, and the New Zealanders looked to have the match in their pocket when Azharuddin came in in the 29th over, with 161 runs still required. Instead, his counter-attack, which produced the fastest hundred in a one-day international, swung the game India's way. He added 127 in 83 balls with Ajay Sharma for the sixth wicket, and in an extraordinary display of batting pyrotechnics he reached his century off the 62nd ball he faced. His unbeaten 108 came off 65 balls and included three sixes and ten fours. The previous fastest hundred was by Javed Miandad off 69 balls, against India at Lahore in 1982-83.
Man of the Match: M. Azharuddin.
