India v South Africa, 1999-2000

At Kochi, March 9

15-Apr-2001
At Kochi, March 9. India won by three wickets. Toss: South Africa.
Farce at the finish made a nonsense of the batting feast that preceded it. The last over began with eight needed. Pollock's second delivery was called no-ball - television indicated no overstepping - and the target soon became four from four balls. Kumble's steer to third man brought three, but in stopping the ball Kallis crossed the boundary and umpire Singh signalled four. Stumps were drawn and the players left the field. The TV umpire then pointed out that Kallis was not touching the ball when he went over the line and, after some delay, the players were ordered back for Robin Singh to face one more delivery. Kirsten and Gibbs had set up the game with a 235-run opening stand in 40 overs, Gibbs taking flight with two sixes over cover in the third over. Ganguly, India's new captain, responded in kind, hitting three fours in Pollock's first over and three more in Kallis's second. Still, it needed Jadeja, with three sixes and eight fours, to get India within striking distance of such a challenging target.
Man of the Match: A. Jadeja.
