Rohan Kanhai batted splendidly in compiling 256, the highest score for West Indies in any Test against India. It was his first century in Test cricket, and he batted six and a half hours, hitting forty-two 4's.
Butcher, who shared a fourth-wicket stand of 217 in just over three hours with Rohan Kanhai, stayed three hours and hit fifteen 4's; then Sobers and Solomon put on 160 in two hours twenty minutes without being separated. Sobers reached his third century of the series and his sixth in his last ten Test innings.
By the end of the second day India had lost two wickets in scoring 29, and they followed on 490 behind. Gilchrist, whose match figures were nine wickets for 73, and Hall swept through the second innings, and West Indies won with a day and a half to spare.
