Kallis in control as Havell unsettles South Africa

What should have been a gentle workout for South Africa's top-order batsmen was scuppered by a bowler with just one first-class appearance under his belt, and that a wicketless outing for Sussex two seasons ago. Paul Havell took 4 for 77 as the South Africans reached 317 for 5 at the close on the second day of their rain-interrupted match against Derbyshire.

The 23-year-old Havell trapped Graeme Smith leg-before for 9 with an inswinger in his third over, and then in his second spell dismissed Neil McKenzie and Boeta Dippenaar in the space of four balls. Havell completed his haul when Mark Boucher was lbw for 89 playing across the line.

Despite these setbacks, it was the South Africans' day thanks largely to a stylish 141 not out by Jacques Kallis. He overcame a slow Derby pitch to record his first first-class hundred of the year.

Smith's early departure (13 for 1) was followed by that of Rudolph, who never settled against the moving ball and scored a painful 15 from 59 balls before falling lbw to Neil Gunter driving across the line (50 for 2).

Kallis and McKenzie took the score to 106 before McKenzie edged Havell to the wicketkeeper Luke Sutton for 22, and Dippenaar struck a four before becoming Havell's second wicket of the over (111 for 4).

But the experience of Kallis and Boucher steadied the ship with a fifth-wicket stand of 161. Kallis completed his hundred, made off 148 balls, shortly after tea, and Boucher looked set for his until Havell's intervention.

Kallis continued on his unflustered way until the close, but it was Havell who left the field to the biggest cheers.
