Karn Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah produced a match-defining display of bowling - with combined figures of 7 for 23 in seven overs, to lift Mumbai into their fourth final of the Indian Twenty20 competition, thrashing Kolkata by six wickets in the second Qualifier at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore on Friday.
Rohit Sharma, Mumbai's captain, won the toss and chose to bowl first and his bowlers did the job on a surface that favoured bowlers. The aggressive Kolkata openers, Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine, scored just three in the first over, and Bumrah undid the hard-hitting Lynn in the second as he tried to loft him over mid-on.
Narine, had scored the bulk of his runs this season through mid-off, at a blistering pace: 78 - 36.45% of his 214 - off 24 balls. Mumbai's bowlers though stifled Narine by targeting his pads. The ploy paid dividends as he managed just 10 off seven balls. The pressure paid off as Narine attempted to slog a Sharma googly, which he missed and was stumped. Sharma then dismissed Gautam Gambhir and Colin de Grandhomme off successive deliveries an over later. Kolkata, at 31 for 5 at that stage, never recovered of the early collapse. They scored just 107, which Mumbai eclipsed with 33 balls remaining. Sharma ended with figures of 4 for 16, and Bumrah with figures of 3 for 7.
