Mumbai left-arm spinner, Krunal Pandya, helped contain Bangalore's powerful top order with an economical display of one for 15, that helped his side beat their opponents by six wickets in their Indian Twenty20 competition encounter in Bangalore on Wednesday.
Mumbai's captain, Rohit Sharma, won the toss and opted to bowl first on a dry surface that offered grip even to a brand-new ball. Mumbai's new-ball attack, comprising of Tim Southee and Mitchell McClenaghan, made the most of the favourable bowling conditions and dismissed Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle in the first four overs.
A neat display from Southee, McClenaghan and then Pandya restricted Bangalore to just 25 runs in the Powerplay, their third lowest Powerplay score in Bangalore in the history of the competition. AB de Villiers and KL Rahul set about rebuilding the innings with a 43-run stand for the third wicket that came from 6.3 overs
Pandya, introduced into the attack in the fifth over, succeeded in containing an in form de Villiers and Rahul. He conceded just two runs in his first over and eight from his second over. The dearth of runs prompted de Villiers to take chances against Pandya in his third over - the 11th of the innings. But, he only succeeded in top-edging Pandya to deep midwicket. Bangalore had managed 60 at that stage.
Shane Watson and later Sachin Baby joined Rahul in his effort to power Bangalore to a sizeable total, but the hosts scored just 151 in their 20 overs. Mumbai, who had managed just 85 against Hyderabad on May 8, lost opener Parthiv Patel in the second over for just one. Rohit Sharma and Ambati Rayadu provided some stability to the innings and added 59 runs for the second wicket. Following their departure, Kieron Pollard and Jos Buttler guided Mumbai to their sixth win from 11 matches, with a quick fire 55-run stand that came from just 21 balls.
"I was just trying to vary pace. The wicket was on the slower side and I just wanted to mix it up," Pandya, the Man of the Match, said. "Generally Bangalore is a heavy-scoring ground and I expected the same, but I got the idea, after a few balls, that it would be good to vary my pace here. When I was not playing IPL, my dream team was Mumbai Indians, and it's an honour to be part of the team."
