Neil McKenzie and Jacques Kallis staked their claims to places in South Africa's Test team, as Kent's bowlers endured a long hot day in the sun at Canterbury.
McKenzie, twelfth man for last week's Lord's triumph, scored a fine unbeaten 102 to increase the pressure on Boeta Dippenaar who could manage only a single before being dismissed by Ben Trott. But Dippenaar and Herschelle Gibbs were South Africa's only failures. Kallis marked his return to the team with a run-a-ball 77, while Jacques Rudolph stroked a stylish 92.
South Africa did have one scare, when Gary Kirsten (40) was forced to retire hurt after being struck a painful blow on the elbow by Martin Saggers. There were fears it might be serious, but a Kent spokesman later confirmed that he had suffered nothing more than bruising and a touch of swelling.
South Africa declared at an imposing 325 for 4, and made swift inroads into Kent's batting. Michael Carberry and the man of the moment, Ed Smith, were dismissed in single figures, but Rob Key and Matthew Banes played sensibly to prevent any further losses to the new ball.
