NEW ZEALAND v AUSTRALIA 1981-82

At Wellington, February 20

15-Apr-1983
At Wellington, February 20. Australia won by eight wickets. Having won the toss in both the earlier one-day internationals, Chappell, reckoning it was his turn to call wrong, delegated Hughes to toss for him. The ruse worked, enabling Chappell to send New Zealand in on a pitch tailor-made for his seamers. Alderman, keeping the ball well up to the bat, took five for 17, the best figures of any bowler in fourteen one-day matches between the two countries. Lillee, bowling flat out, gave excellent support and New Zealand were all out for 74 in 29 overs, 34 of these runs coming in a half-hour stand for the eighth wicket between Hadlee and Cairns. Australia had no difficulty in achieving their target and so won the Rothmans Cup.
Man of the Match: T. M. Alderman.
