New Zealand v Australia, 2005-06

New Zealand v Australia, 2005-06

Don Cameron
15-Apr-2006

At Auckland, December 3, 2005 (day/night). Australia won by 147 runs. Toss: New Zealand. Oneday international debut: B. J. Hodge.
A crowd of around 21,500 tossed insulting material - both vocal and solid - at the Australians, but it did not affect their performance. Ponting and Katich put on 118 after the early loss of Gilchrist, and Australia eased towards 252. It was more than enough on a pitch of variable bounce. The Australian attack hardly looked frightening on paper, but Bracken claimed two early wickets, then Lee stepped in. In a fiery display he removed the Marshall twins and McMillan in an opening spell of 6- 4-5-3... and three of those runs were wides. Symonds and Clark, an impressive medium-fast bowler in the McGrath mould, completed the rout, with only Cairns offering much resistance. Ponting later complained about the crowd behaviour, after debris was hurled at his players. "It ruins the game of cricket," he said. "Brett Lee was missed by quite a few pieces. We put Brad Hogg down there, and it didn't end up much better."
Man of the Match: B. Lee.
