At Christchurch, February 22, 2005 (day/night). Australia won by 106 runs. Toss: New Zealand.
New Zealand's preference for chasing rather than setting totals rebounded on them after Fleming
handed Australia's powerful batting order first use of a benign pitch. They racked up 314 thanks largely to Hayden, who - after being dropped for the VB Series finals earlier in the month -
confirmed his return to form with a century. However, it was not all good news for Hayden: he
later hurt his shoulder diving for an outfield catch, an injury that ruled him out of the remainder
of the one-day series. The match was effectively over as a contest once Lee and McGrath demolished
New Zealand's top order, and some adventurous late-innings slogging by Vettori was their one
highlight. He added 62 for the eighth wicket with Jeff Wilson, the former All Black back in the
international side after an absence of almost 12 years. Wilson enjoyed his comeback with the bat
rather more than with the ball.
Man of the Match: M. L. Hayden.
