†NEW ZEALAND v ENGLAND 1987-88

At Napier, March 16

15-Apr-1989
At Napier, March 16. New Zealand won by seven wickets. Toss: New Zealand. Complacency and carelessness may have had much to do with this extraordinary about-turn. After twice outplaying New Zealand, once embarrassingly so, England simply did not make sufficient runs on a fine batting pitch. They then let themselves down with fielding of a deplorable standard. Broad, playing more responsibly than of late, dominated England's innings, his 106 coming from 139 balls, but from 137 for three, with 23 overs left, the innings fell away alarmingly. When New Zealand batted, Wright increased his tally for the series to 214 in three games and was mobbed, somewhat roughly, by elements of the 12,000 crowd when he became the first New Zealander for four years to hit a limited-overs century. Greatbatch and Rutherford finished the job, putting on 51 in nine carefree overs.
Man of the Match: J. G. Wright.
