New Zealand v England 2007-08

Wisden's review of New Zealand v England, 3rd ODI, 2007-08

15-Apr-2009
At Auckland, February 15, 2008 (day/night). England won by six wickets (D/L method). Toss: England.
England were scrambling to keep the series alive after two desperately poor performances but, just as he did in the previous year's one-day series in Australia, Collingwood stepped up to deliver a match-winning innings. As captain, Collingwood had played a big role in the dressing-room after the Hamilton defeat. Harsh words were spoken, and the players admitted it had been "a huge wake-up call". This win stopped the rot and proved they were capable of competing in the 50- over game after all. Twenty20 heroes Mascarenhas and Wright supplanted Bopara and Swann, and things clicked into place. New Zealand's opening pair failed at last as Broad bowled perhaps his finest spell yet for England. He returned three for 32 - 15 of those runs coming in his tenth over - with some high quality seam bowling. England's fascination with run-outs continued when Mustard hit the ball straight to Vettori and ran all the way back to the dressing-room. Bell and Pietersen added 107 in 23 overs and, when they fell in quick succession, Collingwood put the outcome beyond doubt, with 70 off 50 balls, with three sixes.
Man of the Match: P. D. Collingwood. Attendance: 13,382.
