New Zealand v South Africa, 2011-12

Wisden's review of the first Twenty20, New Zealand v South Africa, 2011-12

15-Apr-2013
At Wellington (Westpac Stadium), February 17, 2012 (floodlit). New Zealand won by six wickets. Toss: New Zealand. Twenty20 international debut: R. E. Levi.
Guptill made light work of a below-par target given some respectability only by Ontong, who hoicked Williamson for four consecutive sixes over midwicket. Southee bowled particularly well at important times, but the South Africans looked and played like jet-lagged tourists. Guptill's innings was smart as well as skilful, mostly calm but occasionally brutal. He launched a delivery from Tsotsobe on to the roof of the stadium, a shot measured by television gadgetry at a staggering 127 metres, one of the biggest recorded. New Zealand were captained by Brendon McCullum in the absence of Ross Taylor, who was suffering from a calf injury.
Man of the Match: M. J. Guptill.
