NEW ZEALAND v WEST INDIES

At Margao, Goa, October 26

15-Apr-1996
At Margao, Goa, October 26. No result. Toss: West Indies. International debut: R. Dhanraj.
Misguidedly choosing to bat on an underprepared pitch, West Indies were all out for 123; only a downpour at lunch rescued them. Slow left-armer Hart bowled imaginatively to return five for 22, the best limited-overs analysis for New Zealand, while Parore became their first player to make five dismissals in a one-day international. But their first joint victim was the most significant. At 71 for one in the 14th over, umpire Murali, a newcomer at this level, gave Lara out stumped. Lara begged him to consult his colleague in the television replay box and showed some truculence when Murali refused. (The replay was indecisive, so Lara might have been reprieved.) ICC referee Raman Subba Row suspended Lara for one game and fined him half his match fee. West Indies' remaining eight wickets fell for 52 but the rain was to foil New Zealand.
