New Zealand v Zimbabwe, 2011-12

Wisden's review of the first ODI, New Zealand v Zimbabwe, 2011-12

Andrew Alderson
15-Apr-2013
At Dunedin (University Oval), February 3, 2012. First one-day international: New Zealand won by 90 runs. New Zealand 248 (48.3 overs) (M. J. Guptill 70, K. S. Williamson 35, N. L. McCullum 30, A. M. Ellis 33; S. W. Masakadza 4-46); Zimbabwe 158 (41.1 overs) (B. R. M. Taylor 58; K. D. Mills 3-26, R. J. Nicol 4-19). One-day international debuts: D. G. Brownlie, A. M. Ellis, T. W. M. Latham (New Zealand).
New Zealand were reeling at 4-2 in the second over, but Guptill struck nine fours in a crisp innings, putting on 88 with Williamson, then Tom Latham (24) and Andrew Ellis added sound debut knocks. Zimbabwe chased poorly: at 15-3 in the seventh over they were up against it. Nicol gave his off-breaks some loop, and the batsmen could not resist, giving him flattering figures from just 4.1 overs. Brendan Taylor did hit Nicol out of the ground, but misjudged the pace and width of the next delivery and was swallowed at long-off.
Man of the Match: M. J. Guptill.
