Matthew Nicholson kept New South Wales on top with four wickets, including 3 for 3 from three overs, as Tasmania struggled at the SCG. Stuart MacGill picked up the first breakthrough of Travis Birt before Nicholson struck in an inspired burst. David Dawson was Nicholson's opening wicket, bowled for 25, and he then hit twice in an over to remove Rhett Lockyear and George Bailey. Tasmania's mood worsened when Nicholson returned to end the stubborn resistance of Michael Dighton, who made 42.
Brad Haddin scored his fourth first-class century to guide New South Wales to first-innings points and a lead of 96 against Tasmania at the SCG. Haddin hit 10 fours and a six in his 121-ball knock, which ended when he was caught by Bailey off the left-arm spin of Xavier Doherty.
