†PAKISTAN v AUSTRALIA 1982-83

Pakistan were led by Zaheer Abbas in the absence of Imran Khan, who was unwilling to risk a recurrence of a thigh muscle strain so soon after the tour to England

15-Apr-1984
Pakistan were led by Zaheer Abbas in the absence of Imran Khan, who was unwilling to risk a recurrence of a thigh muscle strain so soon after the tour to England. Jalal-ud-Din, Imran's replacement, took the first hat-trick in a one-day international against Australia. With the fourth, fifth and sixth balls of his seventh over, he bowled Marsh, had Yardley caught at the wicket and bowled Lawson. Hughes put Pakistan in on a greenish pitch which proved gentle in pace, and Mohsin Khan hit fifteen boundaries in his 165-minute stay. Wood and Laird began with a run-a-minute partnership of 104 in 23 overs, but Tauseef Ahmed claimed three wickets in quick succession and Jalal-ud-Din hammered home the advantage. There were so many spectator intrusions during Pakistan's innings that Hughes and manager Egar demanded police action to prevent them. The Australians' collapse from 104 for one to 170 for nine was indicative of looming batting difficulties.
Man of the Match: Mohsin Khan.
