Spectacular batting produced a famous finish in front of an ear-splitting capacity crowd of 33,000. Pakistan wanted nine off the last over, and Nehra bowled it beautifully until his final ball, a full toss - but, with six required, Moin Khan sliced it up for a simple catch. Reminded of India's defeat in similar circumstances at Sharjah in 1985-86, Ganguly rejoiced that "there was no Javed Miandad batting". Put in, curiously, India were kick-started by Sehwag, who hit 79 in 57 balls.

Dravid controlled the middle order before being bowled by Shoaib Akhtar's slower ball for 99. There was no century in a total of 349, but there were 30 runs from wides and no-balls: Navedul- Hasan conceded 17 runs before his second legal delivery. Pakistan were 34 for two in the eighth over, but Inzamam-ul-Haq played a great innings, 122 off 102 balls, and they managed seven an over while he was in. Then he fell with 72 required, and Kaif took a champion airborne catch, running from long-on to mid-off and almost colliding with a team-mate, to remove Shoaib Malik. Though they were just short, Pakistan's 344 was the highest total batting second in a one-day international, and 693 the highest ever aggregate.
