Kaushik prospers, Maxwell suffers
Glenn Maxwell joined his new captain M Vijay in the eighth over after chinaman bowler Shivil Kaushik had dismissed Shaun Marsh. Kaushik's first ball to Maxwell was short and wide, and the batsman saw an opportunity to scythe it through point. The ball skidded past the bat, but Dinesh Karthik collected and appealed vociferously. Maxwell was left puzzled as the umpire raised his finger and he trudged off the field bemused.
Kings XI's binary code
After a sparkling start in the Powerplay, Kings XI huffed and puffed to 154. Openers M Vijay (55) and Marcus Stoinis (27) added 65 in quick time. There was a mid-innings stutter but David Miller (31) and Wriddhiman Saha (33) stabilised them. Except for those four batsmen, however, none of the others in the line-up could cross 1. Three batsmen were dismissed for ducks, and four mustered 1.
A Champion riposte
Lions had been reduced to 39 for 4 in their chase of 155 when Dwayne Bravo came to the crease in the seventh over. Axar had just removed Karthik with a slider. The left-arm spinner went wide of the crease and got another delivery to skid through to Bravo, who poked at it with leaden feet. A thick inside-edge clattered into leg stump, leaving Lions on 39 for 5, and Axar broke into a jig - pushing out his hands in front of his chest - imitating Bravo's Champion dance.
Stoinis' distressed calls
In the 18th over of the chase, James Faulkner heaved a full delivery from Marcus Stoinis to deep midwicket. Faulkner had not connected well enough and Maxwell hurtled in for the catch. The ball bounced just in front of his dive and went through to the boundary. Maxwell inspected his fingers for any damage. Stoinis, though, was unaware that the ball had trickled into the boundary. He urged Maxwell to get up with frantic movement of his hands. Maxwell smiled and pointed to the boundary. Stoinis smiled and apologised.
