Lancashire made slow but steady progress in chipping away at Kent's huge 602 at a rainy Blackpool. Play did not start until after lunch, but when it did Mark Chilton led the fightback with his fourth hundred of the season. When he was dismissed for 114, Chris Schofield continued the run spree with 66 and Glenn Chapple chipped in with 33. Bad light then began to encircle Stanley Park and despite the best efforts of Alamgir Sheriyar, who switched from his usual left-arm fast to orthodox spin, the umpires called the day to an early halt. Lancashire still require 106 to avoid the follow on.

Good news for England and Warwickshire: after last Saturday's NatWest Series final, Ashley Giles has picked up the knack of taking wickets again. Giles finished with 4 for 75 as Middlesex were left facing the follow on at Southgate. Five of Middlesex's top six made 29 or more, but none of them passed fifty. One of those was Ed Joyce (29), who along with Addul Razzaq (0) and Paul Weekes (10) were all victims of Giles. David Nash kept battling towards the end with 29 not out and ate up some valuable time, but a couple of those Middlesex top six are going to have to make big scores tomorrow if they can escape with a draw.

Sussex tightened their grip over Leicestershire at Grace Road thanks to Matt Prior and Mushtaq Ahmed. Prior fell four short of what would have been his fourth first-class century as Sussex moved on from their overnight 340 for 5 to 416 all out, and a lead of 96. Leicestershire used nine bowlers in all and the pick of them was the old warhorse, Philip DeFreitas, who followed up his hundred with 5 for 55. John Maunders and Darren Stevens then made a good start by putting on 70 for the first wicket, but then you-know-who struck for Sussex. Mushtaq removed both openers along with Paul Nixon late in the day to leave Leicestershire 90 ahead, but five wickets down.

Resuming play on a treacherous 114 for 4 and 138 runs behind, Hampshire were facing an innings defeat at the hands of Glamorgan, but Nic Pothas led a remarkable comeback to turn the tables. Pothas smacked 121, including 18 fours and two sixes, and shared a 149-run partnership with Dimitri Mascarenhas, who made 75. And Richard Hindley, on his first-class debut, then helped turn the game Hampshire's way with an unbeaten 68 from 70 balls to take the total to 449. And Glamorgan were in trouble from the off as they lost three quick wickets in their pursuit of 198. Chris Tremlett removed both openers and Hampshire's hopes of an unlikely win were raised even further when James Bruce dismissed nightwatchman Mark Wallace with the final ball of the day to set up an exciting finish tomorrow at The Rose Bowl.
