At just on three hours, this was the shortest limited-overs international ever played to a result. History will suggest that Salmond, facing a team including Ambrose and Walsh, was misguided in choosing to bat on a surface that encouraged seam, swing and bounce. Hamilton, playing with a confidence alien to his team-mates, averted that catastrophe, but ran out of partners. Between them, Walsh and Ambrose bowled 17 overs for 15 runs. Determined to up their net run-rate, West Indies stormed out of the blocks and won with 239 balls to spare, a record for 50-overs internationals.
