Scotland v West Indies

At Leicester, May 27

15-Apr-2000
At Leicester, May 27. West Indies won by eight wickets. Toss: Scotland. International debut: J. G. Williamson.
At just on three hours, this was the shortest limited-overs international ever played to a result. History will suggest that Salmond, facing a team including Ambrose and Walsh, was misguided in choosing to bat on a surface that encouraged seam, swing and bounce. But he felt it was unlikely to improve and that his team was happier setting a target: "I thought if we got a few on the board, we could give them a game," he explained afterwards.
At 18 for one after 14 overs, and barely a shot off the middle of the bat, Salmond's optimism was already floundering. Eight overs later, at 29 for seven, his priority was to better the 43 made by Pakistan against West Indies at Cape Town in 1992-93, the lowest one-day international total. Hamilton, playing with a confidence alien to his team-mates, averted that catastrophe, but ran out of partners. Between them, Walsh and Ambrose bowled 17 overs for 15 runs. Determined to up their net run-rate, West Indies stormed out of the blocks and won with 239 balls to spare, a record for 50-overs internationals.
Man of the Match: C. A. Walsh. Attendance: 3,936.
