Kerrigan seeks career salvation at Northants

Simon Kerrigan, the Lancashire left-arm spinner, has joined Northants on a loan deal.

Kerrigan, who has played only two Championship games this season, will replace Graeme White, the Northants left-arm spinner, who is injured. He has come straight into the side for the Championship match against Gloucestershire starting on Sunday.

Kerrigan's career has stalled since he played such a huge role in Lancashire's Championship triumph of 2011. He endured a notoriously tough Test debut in 2013 when Shane Watson mauled his bowling and has subsequently slipped down the pecking order for both club and country.

He is currently seen as third or fourth choice spinner at Lancashire (behind Stephen Parry and Matt Parkinson, who are in the Lancashire side for the match against Hampshire, and perhaps Arron Lilley) but, aged 28, it is not impossible his best years could still be ahead of him.

Whether the remainder of his career will be played at Lancashire remains to be seen. While Lancashire have stressed this deal only covers the next month, it is possible that Kerrigan, with opportunities apparently limited at Old Trafford, will be allowed to explore options elsewhere.
