Trescothick ton puts Somerset in charge

Marcus Trescothick established himself as the leading run-maker in the County Championship with an imperious 189 on the second day of Somerset's match with Yorkshire at Taunton. The innings took Trescothick's tally in the competition to 827, at an average of just under 69, and helped Somerset to a first-innings lead as they ran up 389 for 6 in reply to 358.

Arul Suppiah made 95, his best score of the season, and shared an opening stand of 257 with his captain, while James Hildreth weighed in with an unbeaten 49. But Yorkshire hit back in the closing stages of the day, Ryan Sidebottom the pick of their bowlers with two for 51. When Trescothick finally fell after facing 247 balls and hitting 17 fours and four sixes he became Sidebottom's 500th first-class victim.

Somerset began on seven without loss. Suppiah was dropped at slip on 9 by Adil Rashid off Ajmal Shahzad and was to be given another life on 68 when another slip chance was spurned by Adam Lyth off Oliver Hannon-Dalby. Trescothick survived some close shaves against Sidebottom, but blossomed as the morning progressed and by lunch the pair had take the total to 112.

They were comfortable after the break until Trescothick, on 98, survived a sharp caught and bowled chance to Hannon-Dalby. The next ball was nudged through midwicket for two and the former England opener had reached his third Championship ton of the season off 146 balls.

He was soon celebrating by pulling two deliveries from Hannon-Dalby into the Marcus Trescothick Stand at the County Ground and also collected a maximum by lifting legspinner Rashid effortlessly over long-on.

Suppiah grew in confidence as his innings progressed and looked certain to follow his partner to three figures. But then he lost concentration and pulled a short ball from Rashid straight to mid-wicket, having faced 192 balls and hit 14 fours and a six. Nick Compton was quickly caught behind and teenager Alex Barrow made only 10 as Yorkshire fought back either side of tea.

It was 325 for 3 when the visitors took the new ball and Sidebottom used it well, forcing Trescothick to edge to first slip and pinning Peter Trego lbw for a fourth ball duck. Jos Buttler's poor run of Championship form continued when he drove a catch to cover off Steven Patterson and Somerset were in danger of throwing away what looked set to be a considerable advantage.

But Hildreth made sure they passed Yorkshire's score with some typically fluent shots, and the first session tomorrow could prove crucial.
