By the end of a riveting game that swung back and forth, Australia had levelled the series with one to play. The cool head in the final over belonged to Mick Lewis, who became the first No. 11 to hit the winning runs for Australia in a one-day international. Although Dippenaar won the match award, there was an argument that 145 balls for his 101 was too slow on a true pitch; he didn't receive the award anyway - he was on a drip suffering from heat exhaustion. Pollock injected urgency for South Africa with a mighty 53 from just 33, but even so, as Katich and Gilchrist ticked off 87 untroubled runs, a routine victory looked likely. Then both fell to attacking shots, and moments later Australia were 101 for four. Symonds tilted the game back their way with savage hitting but, when he was seventh out in the 43rd over, Australia still needed 29. Clark calmly kept the momentum going, leaving Lewis to punch the air with wild delight after clipping Hall for a couple through midwicket. Things might have been different had Pollock not limped off with a back injury after five overs.
