South Africa v England 1999-2000

Toss: England.

15-Apr-2001
Toss: England.
After a week of torrential rain, said to be the worst at the Wanderers in 40 years, there were fears the final would be abandoned and the trophy shared. However, play eventually began at 4.30 p.m. on the reserve day, with the match reduced to 45 overs each. When the pitch, which had spent almost a week under covers, at last saw the light of day, it turned out to be a seam bowler's dream. Hussain won his first toss of the tournament and, after nine overs, South Africa were reeling at 21 for five. But shortly afterwards Gough and then Caddick were taken off. This allowed Cronje and Boucher to consolidate - they added 74 for the sixth wicket - and the opportunity to dismiss South Africa for a small total was lost. When England batted, Cronje did not repeat Hussain's mistake. Pollock, getting such extravagant movement as to make him often unplayable, bowled his nine overs in a single spell and returned his best one-day figures against England. All five of his wickets came from catches to the wicket-keeper and slips.
