SOUTH AFRICA v PAKISTAN

At East London, February 15

15-Apr-1994
At East London, February 15. Pakistan won by nine runs, South Africa's target having been revised to 172 from 31 overs. Toss: Pakistan. International debut: E. L. R. Stewart.
The visitors started badly against good bowling from Donald and De Villiers before a fourth-wicket partnership of 165, a record for Pakistan in limited-overs internationals, between Javed Miandad and Asif Mujtaba, swung the balance. Miandad started cautiously, needing 103 balls to reach 50. Thereafter he played with growing freedom. He brought up his century in the last over and then lofted a six off De Villiers before being run out off the final delivery, for 107 from 145 balls. Nevertheless, South Africa were on course for a target adjusted by rain, until a yorker from Wasim Akram ended a stand of 69 in nine overs between Cronje and Rhodes. He then wrecked the rest of the innings to return his best figures in one-day internationals.
Man of the Match: Javed Miandad.
