South Africa v Sri Lanka

At Centurion, November 29, 2002

15-Apr-2004
At Centurion, November 29, 2002. South Africa won by 177 runs. Toss: South Africa.
South Africa overwhelmed Sri Lanka in every department. Smith and Dippenaar reached their highest one-day international scores, and Kallis bludgeoned his fifty in 24 balls, the second-fastest for South Africa. The air of command vanished only when Smith got to 99, pushed a ball from Jayasuriya just right of mid-wicket, hesitated, then went for the single that would have given him a century... He was the first man run out for 99 in a one-day international. The total of 317 was their best against Sri Lanka, who were punished for fielding just three front-line bowlers - 106 runs flooded from the last ten overs - and were fined a further over for their slow rate. Jayasuriya launched a thrilling counter-attack against the new ball, smacking 46 from 32 deliveries, but any hopes of squaring the series faded when three wickets fell in 14 balls. Ntini destroyed the middle order, and Sri Lanka were humbled for just 140.
Man of the Match: J. H. Kallis. Attendance: 11,435.
