Wisden's review of South Africa v West Indies, South Africa A v West Indians, 2007-08

15-Apr-2009
At East London, December 19, 20, 21, 2007. South Africa A won by ten wickets. Toss: West Indians. West Indians 193 (R. S. Morton 54, D. J. G. Sammy 40, R. N. Lewis 40; M. Zondeki 5-39) and 214 (D. J. Bravo 67, D. Ramdin 35, D. J. G. Sammy 57; M. Zondeki 3-61, J. Botha 4-20); South Africa A 371 (M. N. van Wyk 89, N. D. McKenzie 54, J-P. Duminy 62, J. L. Ontong 114*; D. J. Bravo 6-51) and 39-0.
The West Indians suffered a worrying defeat with more than a day to spare in their sole first- class warm-up before the Test series. The tourists' batting never really fired, with the tail needing to wag to rescue them from 112-7 in the first innings and 118-6 in the second. Justin Ontong hit 11 fours and two sixes. South Africa A had also defeated the New Zealand tourists the month before. Man of the match Monde Zondeki became the first South African to take 50 first-class wickets by the end of December in a home season. The feat had previously been achieved by three touring players: Ian Johnson, Richie Benaud and Dick Motz.
