At Johannesburg, February 25, 2005 (day/night). South Africa won by 165 runs. Toss: Zimbabwe. One-day international debut: S. C. Williams.
At first glance, South Africa's scorecard suggests a benefit match - "fifty and out". But most benefit matches are more competitive. Smith, who eased to a half-century with mistimed drives and snicked nudges, later complained about a two-paced pitch; his real trouble was the no-paced bowling. He eventually missed a straight, high, harmless full toss from part-time spinner Matsikenyeri (to dressing-room mirth), while Utseya returned three for 40, with batsmen swatting and missing his looping off-spin as if the ball were a resilient mosquito. Boucher thumped 49 in 29 balls and the final five overs cost 70. Zimbabwe's reply was terrible, South Africa's bowling little better, though there were enough straight balls to finish off with nearly 13 overs to spare. Surprisingly, just over 7,000 spectators turned up: many spent the second innings watching televised rugby in the bars.
Man of the Match: M. V. Boucher. Attendance: 7,372.
