Following the twice-aborted final of the ICC Champions Trophy between Sri Lanka and India in September 2002, this was the fourth time in four one-day internationals at the Premadasa Stadium that the monsoon had had the final say. Hopes of a prompt start were dashed when steady drizzle began to fall at lunchtime. Then the shower turned into an apocalyptic electrical storm. Sri Lanka's 1-0 series win gave Vaughan his first failure in four one-day series as captain.
