Sri Lanka v England 2007-07

Wisden's match report for the first ODI between Sri Lanka and England, 2007-08

At Dambulla, October 1, 2007 (day/night). Sri Lanka won by 119 runs. Toss: Sri Lanka. One-day international debut: P. Mustard.
England made five changes to the team which overcame India at Lord's three weeks previously. Wicketkeeper Phil Mustard made his international debut, following an injury to Matt Prior; offspinner Graeme Swann was controversially preferred to Monty Panesar, his first appearance since his own debut nearly eight years earlier; Cook returned after briefly being dropped, Sidebottom and Bopara after injury. The reshuffle failed to avert England's seventh consecutive defeat by Sri Lanka. Maharoof's clever changes of pace left them in disarray: he took the first three wickets for four runs in 17 balls and finished with four for 31 from an unbroken ten-over spell, having already contributed a useful 22 off 12 balls. England's only encouragement came from Swann. He was one of just four England batsmen to reach double figures, and also provided turn and control with the ball. Swann beat Sangakkara as he advanced down the pitch to earn a first international wicket for himself and Mustard, who completed the stumping to end a profitable 71- run stand with Jayawardene.
Man of the Match: M. F. Maharoof.
