SRI LANKA v NEW ZEALAND 1983-84

At Kandy, March 9, 10, 11, 13, 14

15-Apr-1985
At Kandy, March 9, 10, 11, 13, 14. New Zealand won by 165 runs. Rain, continuing to dog the New Zealanders, washed out the first four sessions of a match which, once it started, was closely contested until Sri Lanka collapsed on the final day. New Zealand were 120 for one by the close of the second day and all out for 276 before tea on the third. Madugalle was the most solid of the Sri Lankans in their first innings, the highlight of which was a last-wicket partnership of 60 between John and a new cap, Amerasinghe, Sri Lanka's best in Test cricket. With Howarth posting a second half-century, New Zealand declared their second innings eight minutes after lunch on the final day. Sri Lanka's collapse, as they chased 263 in 130 minutes plus twenty overs, amazed spectators and led to disturbances which had to be quelled by riot police. Sri Lanka could amass only 97, of which Ranatunga made 51, which prompted a partial recovery from 18 for six to 97 for eight. Hadlee claimed four wickets for 8 runs from his first six overs and Boock wrapped up the tail.
