Sri Lanka v South Africa

South Africa in Sri Lanka, 2004

Brian Murgatroyd
15-Apr-2005
At Dambulla, August 28, 2004. Sri Lanka won by seven wickets. Toss: Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka underlined their growing depth and confidence as they strolled to victory with 23 balls in hand despite resting several key players. The match appeared to be following a familiar pattern when South Africa lost three wickets in 15 balls after a promising start, but power-hitting from the lower-middle order, with Pollock to the fore, produced 49 runs from the final five overs to set what appeared a challenging target on a pitch expected to lose pace as the day progressed. In reality it was South Africa and not the pitch that ran out of steam as Sangakkara and Jayawardene added a carefree, unbroken 98 from just 90 balls to make that target look hopelessly inadequate. Man of the Match: K. C. Sangakkara.
