SRI LANKA v WEST INDIES

At Manchester, June 7

15-Apr-1976
At Manchester, June 7. West Indies won by nine wickets. Put in on a pitch that did little to help the bowlers, Sri Lanka were completely out of their depth against the lively pace bowling of Roberts, Julien and Boyce and the loss of their first two wickets for five runs set the pattern for a feeble display. Julien with his left-hand swing picked up four wickets at a cost of 20 runs and Boyce with three for 22 completed the rout of the island batsmen in an innings bolstered a little after lunch by a last wicket partnership of 28 runs by De Silva and Kaluperuma. But powerful West Indies were left with the simple task of hitting 87 to win.
Fredericks and Murray treated the Sri Lanka bowlers with scant respect and put together a partnership of 52 before the persevering De Silva dismissed Fredericks for 33. Murray and Kallicharran duly completed the formalities without further loss and the match was all over by 3.30 p.m., Murray being not out for 30 and Kallicharran reaching 19. The former England and Lancashire off-spinner, Roy Tattersall, nominated Julien for the Man of the Match award and a crowd of 5,000 stayed on to see an exhibition match between the two teams.
