Sri Lanka v West Indies, 2011

Wisden's review of the first ODI, Sri Lanka v West Indies, 2011

At Colombo (SSC), January 31, 2011. No result. Toss: West Indies.
A maiden one-day hundred for Adrian Barath, a 20-year-old Trinidadian in his first one-day international outside the Caribbean, steered West Indies to respectability before heavy rain prevented a Sri Lankan reply. The early demise of Gayle, edging an outswinger, and Darren Bravo, who failed to regain his ground at the non-striker's end after setting off for a leg-side single that wasn't there, left West Indies 42 for two, but Barath - surviving a difficult chance to Jayawardene at slip on 54 off the bowling of Mendis - turned the innings around during a 165-run stand with Sarwan. As so often, though, the batting powerplay proved a hindrance rather than a help as Malinga picked up three for three in eight balls: Sarwan and Barath, who faced 129 deliveries in all, were both caught at long-on, before Pollard lost his leg stump to a slow inswinger. But the details were soon rendered immaterial by the weather.
