Spectators stayed away, perhaps fearing a repeat of the truncated contest when these sides last met. But this time Zimbabwe put up more of a fight. They made an encouraging start, dismissing Jayasuriya and Atapattu cheaply, before a stand of 166 in 33 overs between Gunawardene and Jayawardene set up the biggest total of the tournament. Gunawardene fell ten short of his hundred, and Jayawardene got even closer, with 96. Zimbabwe's openers put on 69 in 15 overs, but both fell to Muralitharan, and no one stayed long enough or scored quickly enough to threaten the target. The result assured Sri Lanka's place in the final.
