Sunny century puts Haryana on top

A round-up of the first day's play of the seventh-round Group A games of the Ranji Trophy, 2013-14

Haryana 266 for 2 (Sunny 139*, Dewan 68, Rana 51*) v Gujarat
Scorecard
Gujarat's press for a second win and escape from the middle of the Group A table was dented by a concerted batting effort from Haryana, capped by Sunny Singh's unbeaten century. Having elected to bat in Ahmedabad, Haryana lost only two wickets before stumps and look primed to set the pace of the game, much to Gujarat's distaste, who have only two more games left to book a quarter-final spot.
Avi Barot's stay in the middle was limited to five balls as left-arm seamer Rush Kalaria provided the perfect start for the home side, but they could not capitalise. Rahul Dewan has managed three starts in four previous innings, but broke the jinx in this game with a solid half-century, and ended up scoring 52 of his runs in fours.
Sunny's innings was rife with boundaries as well - 19 fours and two sixes - in his unbeaten 139. He spearheaded two key partnerships - 173 for the second wicket with Dewan and an unbeaten 91 run-stand with Sachin Rana, who took the tally for fifty-plus scores on the day to three.
