At Brisbane, January 19, 2007 (day/night). Australia won by four wickets. Australia 5 pts. Toss: England. One-day international debut: M. B. Loye.
Australia earned a bonus point for their 39th-over victory, but it was a fortunate gift after England matched them for much of the second innings. If Hussey had been given out for an edge to Nixon when 19 - the TV technology, the wicketkeeper and the bowler Anderson were convinced, but umpire Daryl Harper was not - Australia would have been 103 for six, chasing what might suddenly have seemed a formidable 155. Loye, England's 34-year-old debutant, had sprinted to 36 from 36 balls, including a brave slog-swept six behind square leg off Lee. The opening stand reached 52, but the good work was quickly undone as five wickets tumbled for 19, McGrath picking up two in successive balls, while Bell was the fall-guy after an awful mix-up with Collingwood. Although Flintoff, back as captain, and Dalrymple swelled the total a little, it looked as if yet another one-sided encounter was on the cards - but Lewis produced career-best figures, and Anderson moved the ball menacingly in the sultry conditions. Hussey was calm and patient, however, taking 53 deliveries to reach 21, then lifted his rate with a top-edged six off Flintoff: his stand with Lee took Australia home.
Man of the Match: M. E. K. Hussey. Attendance: 38,823.
