Tasmania broke the SCG winning streak of New South Wales by forcing a draw with late-order resistance from Damien Wright and Sean Clingeleffer in the first session. Wright, the stand-in captain, and Clingeleffer both scored half-centuries in a seventh-wicket stand of 159 to put Tasmania out of reach of New South Wales, who had registered three Pura Cup victories and a win against New Zealand on the ground this season.
Tasmania, who were leading by 71 runs at the start of the day, set the home side 220, but New South Wales could not pass the half-way mark in 44 overs. Simon Katich promoted himself to open and when he, Phil Jaques and Matthew Phelps were dismissed by 57 the chase was abandoned.
Stuart MacGill finished with four wickets as New South Wales rued a missed stumping by Brad Haddin from Wright when the score was 206. Despite the result, New South Wales moved to the top of the table and lead Queensland because of a better percentage.
