There was no repeat of last summer's National League upset for
Scotland as they went down by 114 runs to
Warwickshire at Edgbaston. Hundreds from Nick Carter (135 off 86 balls) and Nick Knight (128* off 134) powered Warwickshire to 352 for 2 after they had been put in, the pair adding 181 in 24.3 overs. Although Scotland chased gamely, they were always well behind the asking rate, but fifties from Ian Strager and Corey Richards enabled them to reacha respectable 238.
Sussex raced to a five-wicket win over
Surrey at The Oval after they had seemed on course for defeat, slipping to 58 for 3 in pursuit of the home side's 272 for 9. But Mike Yardy (98 off 105 balls) and Murray Goodwin (89 off 107) put on 156 for the fourth wicket, and Yardy was only denied a deserved hundred when Robin Martin-Jenkins hit the winning runs.
Surrey appeared to have done enough thanks to a good allround performance with the bat. Mark Butcher hit 57, Jon Batty 53, Mark Ramprakash 35 and Ali Brown 36, and with 20 overs remaining Surrey were 189 for 2 and poised for a post-300 score. But their lower order failed to maintain the momentum after Yardy had grabbed 3 for 44, and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan polished off the tail with 3 for 53.
It was a bad day for James Kirtley and Rikki Clarke. Kirtley, returning after more time remodelling his action, failed to find any rhythm and his six overs cost 1 for 39. Clarke limped out of the attack with a shin injury after three unimpressive overs.
