'We can eradicate suspect actions in no time'

Indian umpire AV Jayaprakash, who is part of the BCCI's Illegal Actions Committee, believes that India will be purged of bowlers with suspect actions in the near future

Indian umpire AV Jayaprakash, who is part of the BCCI's Illegal Actions Committee, believes that India will be purged of bowlers with suspect actions in the near future. Jayaprakash said that the BCCI's efforts to weed out illegal actions right from the grassroots can help "eradicate suspect actions in no time"
"We had about 130 bowlers reported six years back from all levels of cricket. The onus was on everybody - the coaches, umpires and management - to do something about it," Jayaprakash told ESPNcricinfo.
"That number has come down drastically to about six or seven. Most of those 130 players were junior cricketers. We don't want to stop them from playing cricket, so we sent them for rehabilitation to correct their actions at a young age. They can be easily corrected. If we work closely with the boards and the various associations, we can eradicate suspect actions in no time."
Jayaprakash also welcomed the use of multiple cameras during matches to help officials catch bowlers who he believes sometimes use "different actions" depending on the situation.
"That [cameras] has helped us a lot. Sometimes during a match situation, a bowler's action may be different from the one he uses in the rehabilitation course," Jayaprakash said. "If they know there is no camera, they may probably bowl to the maximum extent with their proper action. It is not always clear. It changes in a match situation. A bowler's normal action generally comes out under pressure, and that is when the umpires report him."
Since July, a host of international spinners including Saeed Ajmal, Sachithra Senanayake, Sohag Gazi and Prosper Utseya have been suspended for suspect actions, with Ajmal most recently being banned from bowling in September. Even in the recently concluded Champions League Twenty20, the match officials reported several overseas players, and suspended West Indies' Sunil Narine from bowling further tournaments held by the BCCI till he was cleared by the BCCI panel.
