West Indies v Sri Lanka

Wisden's review of the first ODI, West Indies v Sri Lanka

15-Apr-2014
At Kingston, Jamaica, June 28, 2013. West Indies won by six wickets. Toss: West Indies. West Indies 5pts.
Gayle's 21st hundred in one-day internationals put an emphatic end to a rare slump since his century against New Zealand a year earlier, also on his home ground. He had gone 14 matches without reaching 40, but here he was back in more familiar mode from the start, eventually clubbing seven sixes and nine fours from 100 balls. Charles was little more than a bystander in an opening partnership of 115 in 20.2 overs that helped West Indies on their way to a bonus point. By the time Gayle top-edged to square leg, victory was virtually assured. Sri Lanka, sent in, had collapsed after reaching 104 for two in the 22nd over. Narine set them back by despatching Jayawardene in his first over and Sangakkara in his third, then he and Rampaul returned to share five more. The last seven wickets tumbled for 68, and it should have been worse: Gayle dropped a straightforward slip catch off Roach when Mathews, who finished unbeaten with 55, had made only seven.M
Man of the Match: C. H. Gayle.
