India v West Indies

Wisden's review of the second match, India v West Indies

15-Apr-2014
At Kingston, Jamaica, June 30, 2013. West Indies won by one wicket. Toss: West Indies. West Indies 4pts.
Just as in West Indies' lone victory in the Champions Trophy shortly before - by two wickets over Pakistan - steady nerves from the lower order were required to creep past the target. Roach hit the winning run, as he had at The Oval, after spending three overs with last man Best carefully compiling the ten needed to defeat India in their first match since their Champions Trophy triumph. Roach's initial impact had come in an opening spell of 6-2-13-1 on a helpful pitch; Sammy backed him up with 5-3-11-1. The batsmen played more freely as conditions improved, before Rohit Sharma's careless drive ended his diligent 89-ball 60. Dhoni was handicapped by a hamstring torn while sprinting a single; he was unable to take the field later. West Indies were wobbling at 26 for three in the fifth over, before Charles and Darren Bravo steadied them with a stand of 116. A further decline followed Bravo's dismissal; then, just as Charles seemed likely to go all the way, he drove Yadav to mid-off after a typically robust 97, leaving the fast bowlers to seal the deal. It meant victory for Pollard in his first match as captain, in place of Dwayne Bravo, who had a groin strain.
Man of the Match: J. Charles.
