The West Indian openers did well to survive an early, difficult period and put on 125. Greenidge was in commanding form, with four 6s, while Haynes seemed to have a century for the taking before being caught at square leg. India never got on terms with the run-rate and the main excitement for a massive crowd estimated at 30,000 was a sharp but brief earth tremor in mid-afternoon which sent spectators scampering and left a dozen slightly injured.
