At Kingston, April 28. West Indies won by three wickets. Toss: West Indies. International debut: J. L. Ontong.
Jacobs steered the last ball, a full toss from Donald, to the boundary to set off wild celebrations in a capacity 15,000 crowd. Put in, South Africa had been kept in check by West Indies' spinners, and only Kirsten and Rhodes got going. The last six wickets fell for 51, leaving Pollock stranded with overs unused. After West Indies' top three went in the first 16 overs, a stand of 89 between Lara and Hooper set them on course for victory. Then Rhodes removed Lara with a brilliant low catch at point off Donald - repeating their dismissal of Gayle - Hooper, troubled by cramp, was caught in the deep, and the match was wide open again. With 16 needed from ten balls, McGarrell hoisted Kallis for a straight six, but the result still hung on the final ball.
Man of the Match: N. C. McGarrell.
