A hat-trick from Alex Wharf cemented Glamorgan's position at the top of the first division table with a 13-run win over Warwickshire. Wharf removed Graeme Wagg, Nick Knight (who made 111) and Dewald Pretorious in the penultimate over to finish with 4 for 35. In the second division, Shoaib Akhtar was the star, as he produced one of his trademark blitzes to blow Derbyshire to smithereens at Chester-le-Street. Akhtar finished with 4 for 15 from his nine overs, and at one stage Derbyshire had been 10 for 5, with four batsmen out for 0. An unbeaten century from Paul Weekes kept Middlesex at the top of the second division, while Michael Vaughan successfully negotiated his comeback match, a 59-run Yorkshire victory over Scotland at Edinburgh.
