Australia v Pakistan, 2016-17

Wisden's review of the first ODI, Australia v Pakistan, 2016-17

15-Apr-2017
At Brisbane, January 13, 2017 (day/night). Australia won by 92 runs. Toss: Australia. One-day international debuts: C. A. Lynn, B. Stanlake.
Pakistan had their opponents pinned, but let them back to their feet, and ended up being walked all over. Mohammad Amir, returning to form after a ragged end to the Tests, removed Warner and Smith in consecutive balls, and Australia slid to 78 for five, with keeper Mohammad Rizwan taking four catches. Wade began the rebuilding job, putting on 82 with Maxwell, then adding 108 with the tail. A leading edge from the final delivery was enough to raise his first one-day international hundred, at a run a ball. The target seemed gettable, but Pakistan were uncompetitive from the moment Azhar Ali's hamstring went ping. He remained for another seven deliveries - in which time Sharjeel Khan departed - but when he retired Pakistan were, in effect, 39 for two. Australia's quartet of seamers squeezed out regular breakthroughs, and no partnership surpassed the opening stand. Faulkner's bag of slower balls netted four wickets, and Cummins's extra pace three.
Man of the Match: M. S. Wade.
